Two-day Montmeló Test wrapped up on Tuesday
Tuesday, 8 February 2011
The Catalunya Circuit hosted a selection of Moto2 and 125cc riders across two days as they took the opportunity to make some preliminary preparations ahead of the Test at Valencia later this week.
The sound of engines rang out at the Catalunya Circuit on Monday and Tuesday as a number of Moto2 and 125cc riders took to the track just outside Barcelona. Albeit with unofficial engines and lap timings, it was a good opportunity for those present to ease themselves back into riding after the winter period, and make some preliminary preparations for the first major Test of the year which takes place at Valencia this Thursday.
Italian rider Andrea Iannone, who took pole position at the Catalunya GP in 2010, was the quickest rider on the unofficial timesheet, posting a best effort of 1’47.8 on his Suter machine. The Speed Master team rider’s qualifying lap last year for the Moto2 race was 1’47.493.
Impressive progress was made across the two days by 125cc World Champion Marc Márquez, who is getting ready for his debut season in Moto2. The Team Catalunya Caixa Repsol rider lapped at 1’49.1 on day one but had moved to within five-tenths of Iannone’s day two time on Tuesday, registering a 1’48.3 on his Suter.
Other Moto2 riders taking advantage of the two days included Pons Racing duo Aleix Espargaró and Axel Pons, who recorded times of 1’48.4 and 1’48.6 respectively. Technomag CIP rider Dominique Aegerter set a best time of 1’49.7 as he tried out different seating positions on his Suter on Tuesday, and the Swiss rider escaped unharmed from a minor fall early in the day. His team-mate Kenan Sofuoglu was absent on day two after returning home to Turkey for a family matter – the Moto2 newcomer posted a best lap on Monday of 1’50.8 before his departure.
Also on track were PEV-Blusens-SMX Paris Hilton team rider Sergio Gadea and Maverick Viñales, the former of who is returning to the 125cc category for the final season of the two-stroke bikes in 2011.
The Valencia Test takes place from this Thursday to Saturday (February 10th-12th), with another at Estoril from February 15th-17th before the teams and riders run with their official 2011 engines at the final pre-season Test at Jerez from March 4th-6th.
The Fonsi Nieto stops matches
Formally announced the decision, Fonsi Nieto gave a press conference announcing that he 'retired' a few days before the start in Valencia official tests Moto2 category to which would be involved with the group G22 Racing.
As he explained, took this decision because it has not recovered from last year's leg injury that almost cost him his life (he was taking painkillers have side effects and caused cardiac arrest for 40 seconds).
The 32-year old Spaniard, nephew of Angel Nieto, said:
"I got the decision and discuss it with my cousins, Gelete and Pablo, because the group is up and I did not want to create any problem. My leg has not returned. I'm going to the gym and after five minutes I have to stop training. When I do something well, then I will not do at all and prefer to retire. Be aware, however, that this decision causes me great pain also, "he said.
O F. Nieto has won the Spanish Championship 125 cc in 1998 and 250 cc in 1999 and 2000. In 2002 he was second in the World Championship 250 cc, 2005 To the WSBK participated in 2007 participated in MotoGP, which replaced the injured Olivier Jacque at the French Grand Prix
Abraham adaptation to Desmosedici “going well
The Czech rider completed his second official Test on the Ducati bike he will ride in his rookie MotoGP season in 2011 in Malaysia last week.
Abraham describes Ducati apprenticeship
Karel Abraham’s second Test on the Ducati Desmosedici GP11 at Sepang last week produced another important step in the Czech rider’s preparations for his debut season in the premier class in 2011.
After his first contact with the 800cc machine in Valencia last November the 21 year-old was back on track for the official MotoGP Test in Malaysia, where he registered the 15th best time across all three days.
Whilst lap times may not have been the main priority for Abraham and his Cardion AB Motoracing team, the fact that the former Moto2 rider closed the Test at just 1.888s off the top time will have provided further encouragement in addition to the solid progress he made in his continued adaptation to the Ducati.
“We focused mainly on the front and rear tyres, and the behaviour of the front and rear in the turns,” said Abraham, who also explained that he had experienced similar issues with chatter as highlighted at different stages of the Test by factory riders Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi. “At first the front was chattering quite a bit, then the rear was sliding a lot so we had to do something with it, and that’s what we’ve been working hard on.”
On his development as a MotoGP rider, Abraham said: “I think it’s going well. It’s a very difficult bike to ride because it has so much power and I’m not used to it – I think it will take a few more Tests for me to get completely used to it.”
“The lines are completely different to how it was in Moto2 or 250cc. I have to learn a completely new style of riding and that takes time,” he concluded.
